Turn Shuffle Off, Put it on Repeat

Structuration - The "creation and recreation" of organizational environment through rules and regulations.

Structuration with its structure creates somehow a template. In this case a template for everyday life. Each day becomes redundant, repetitive, same as the others. A good example of a repetitive pattern of life is school. School is the same everyday unless of course for special or extreme situations that would call for breaking the pattern.

Everyday we wake up, get dressed, and go to school. In school we have schedules. The schedule never changes and we are forced to follow it and it dictates what we do in school and what class we go to. In class we get tons of work and tests so much so that sometimes when we try to remember our lessons each of the lessons in each class overlaps with each other. It makes everything much more confusing.

Ateneo specifically has its own structure of sorts. One thing that is unique to the Ateneo is the INTAC class. I never really got to know what INTAC was really for because it never really did what it was supposed to and that is introduce us to Ateneo culture. INTAC class was one thing I never looked forward to. Another Ateneo structure is the strict ID implementation. I have no problem with this because it really is for security reasons, though the guards are sometimes too annoying. They know you have an ID but they still check if it's your ID. That's not the problem though. The problem is that they sometimes take too long just to check if the face on your ID is your ID. But all these are just patterns, structures. They are all unavoidable situations and are already part of everyday life. Going to school, home work, school work, ID implementation, schedules they are all what we encounter everyday.

Though patterns are somehow a good thing also. At least we do not have to think hard of what we have to do each day. The only thing we have to think about is whether to follow the pattern or not and sometimes thinking outside the box is a great thing. It adds color to your otherwise black and white life. A little variety won't hurt and it would keep our lives more interesting and exciting.

  1. I agree that the only thing left to do is whether to follow this structure/pattern or not of our daily lives. In my opinion, we students can choose not to go to school but it is us who will suffer in the end. The society dictates that we must go and finish college and graduate in a good school. Good blog Joseph! Keep it up! <3

  2. Hey Joseph,

I find it amazing how structures shape our lives and everyday living. From the moment we wake up,eat, dress,do our homework, prepare for tests and so much more.I think that sometimes structures are like habits. We first create them and it recreates us in return. We get organized by our own schedules and it's up to us to follow or not to follow them. The problem with structures though is that it prevents the element of surprises and excitement because you already know what to expect which makes it seem boring. And you're right about this.At least,it's good to also have a variety and a chance to mix and match to add more life, freedom and creativity. You're post has allowed me to realize this wonderful insight of yours!:D

  3. I share with your sentiments regarding these rules we have being students in the Ateneo. It's true. Structures shape our lives to that of the norm. Our actions and dispositions are greatly affected by these structures of everyday, but it is definitely up to us if we would tend to follow these rules and be part of this structure, or reject or negate it. Going against structures built by society and time are indeed unusual sights, but there are those moments when they(rejections) are the best choices, despite each and every consequence that may arise thereafter. Despite these structures and rules present all around, let's always remember that at the end of the day, we'd be the ones who'll decide for ourselves.

  4. I think structure is a good thing. Somehow it gives us consistency. Structures somehow help us so that we know what to do. It also has it's bad side though. Patterns confines a person into doing less. We are limited to the ideas of normality and consistency that we do not develop our sense of critical thinking anymore because we are used to having these patterns shape our lives. I agree with what you said.. structure is good, it wouldn't hurt to have a little variety though. :)

  5. I agree that structures and patterns are unavoidable situations. Sometimes, it exists even without us knowing or realizing. As Therese said, it is good because it gives us consistency. It allows us to be what society considers to be normal, but there are times when we have to let go of the normalcy and routines we know to make way for new ones.

  6. Hi Jo! Nice blog here. Short yet informative and fun to read. I can that the environment really sets up the rules that we follow. (I kinda remember SA21 readings and lessons with your blog. Haha.)

I also agree that patters removes from us the burden of thinking the things we must do everyday. On the other hand, these patterns also restrict us in some ways. We become limited when it comes to our actions because of these patterns. At some point, these patterns give us a roof and a floor that set our boundaries.

All in all, I see the point of your blog and I mostly agree with it. Keep it up! :>

Up top ! Without these "patterns" that make up our daily lives we would feel lost. They give us guidance, they give us directions to which we follow them. Personally I can't imagine myself without a daily schedule. Maybe only two things would be in my life without a daily sched ...

    1. Sleep
    2. Games

    Nice blog Joseph !
